S.B.C. Yoga’s tips and advice for getting the best out of your yoga practice

These yoga guidelines, tips and advice have been designed to assist you as well as those around you, whilst practising yoga.

  • Before you begin any exercise regimen, including yoga you should first consult your doctor.
  • It is important that you inform your instructor of any medical conditions that could impact your ability to practice yoga. (See the detailed list below.)
  • Be respectful of those around you.
  • Respect the personal space of those around you. Be careful not to step on other student’s mats. Yoga mats are personal items and carry the energy of the student.
  • Wear clothing that is comfortable and allows you to move freely.
  • If you experience any pain or discomfort, other than that which is normal in routine stretching, release from the pose immediately and inform your yoga instructor.
  • Yoga should be practiced in bare feet.
  • Turn off all electronic devices, including mobile phones and MP3. In the event that you are waiting for an emergency call, please put your cell phone in a vibrate mode.
  • Avoid wearing perfumes or strong scents to class. It is optimal to have fresh, clean air during your practice.
  • Always practice in a well ventilated room or even outdoors (ensuring you take the necessary precautions e.g. sunscreen, bug repellent).
  • Yoga is best practiced on an empty stomach. Allow 1-2 hours after a light meal, and 3-4 hours after a heavy meal.
  • Deep twists and inversions should be avoided during the first 48 hours of menstruation.
  • Practice Shavasana at the end of each practice to restore the nervous system and allow the body to integrate the practice you have just been doing.

Medical Conditions that You Should Tell Your Yoga Instructor About:

  • Pregnancy
  • Surgeries
  • Past injuries, such as back or joint injuries
  • Current injuries
